We are looking for a creative, media-savvy and politically aware Media Officer to join our busy Communications team. If you want a varied role where you will get the chance to work on multiple projects and be given the autonomy to put your own ideas forward, and deliver them, then this may be the role for you. Working closely with our high-profile Mayor, you will work on big regional and national stories such as funding for skills, transport, homelessness and housing. This is a fast-paced role where you will be working on some of the biggest communication challenges in the region. Relationship building is a key part of this role as you will need to develop quality relationships with key media contacts on a local, regional, and national level. You will need to deliver strong, proactive and creative announcements, lead on media enquiries and produce quality communication products that promote the work of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). Responsibilities Develop a strong and creative media narrative for the WMCA and directorates Build and maintain strong relations with key media contacts to be able to pitch proactive stories and effectively handle reactive queries Understand and pro-actively communicate key corporate objectives and direction Act as a spokesperson for WMCA in both print and broadcast media when necessary Write and distribute media features as part of a pro-active and planned programme of activity Arrange interviews with media for WMCA spokespeople, produce briefings and attend the interviews to support both the media and the officer Write and issue press releases, briefings and social media posts and produce photo/AV material when required About you You will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated, creative and resilient individual, who has a sharp news sense, excellent judgement and political understanding. Ideally you will have experience of working in a press office or someone who has worked in journalism and can bring a wealth of expertise to this role. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential along with the ability to work to tight deadlines.
